Echoic Verbs as Means of Expressing Semelfactive/Multiplicative Meanings in Contemporary English

چکیده

The article discusses the problem of semelfactive and multiplicative verbs in contemporary English. We state that most semelfactive/multiplicative are sound-imitating origin. On basis four dictionaries (Longman Dictionary Contemporary English (2003), Oxford Advanced Learner’s Current (2000), Webster’s New World American Language (2008), Webster Universal College (1997)), 285 echoic were singled out. Our intention was to study as main means expressing either or multiplicative, both, meanings according context within framework Smith’s (1997) theory aspect which five situation types, namely states, activities, achievements, accomplishments, semelfactives distinguished. results research contribute verbal plurality According suggested semantic classification, analyzed subdivided into three groups: denoting a sound, source is person, thing nature. empirically-based reflected quantitative analysis verbs, concludes sounds caused by used frequently, produced living being more seldom, nature least commonly used. Echoic can also be part light verb constructions, where singular form deverbal noun indicates meaning, while plural expresses one.
